About Hypericum tetrapterum Fr.

Hypericum tetrapterum Fr. is a glabrous, rhizomatous perennial herb that reaches a maximum height of 1.2 meters (3 feet 11 inches). Its stems are square in cross-section, with prominent wings running along the four corners. Leaves grow in opposite pairs, are simple with smooth entire margins, and bear many translucent glandular dots. The leaves have a thin papery texture, grow up to 40 mm (2 inches) long and 24 mm (0.9 inches) wide, and are paler in color on their lower surface. Flowers form in clustered heads that hold 10 to 30 individual flowers, and can occasionally contain up to 70 flowers. Each open flower is 10–15 mm (0.39–0.59 inches) in diameter, with five pale yellow petals and five sepals. Black glands may be present on petals, sepals, and leaves. This species is native to temperate Europe, Mediterranean European countries, north Africa, western Asia, the Caucasus, Iraq, and Iran. It grows commonly in damp habitats including marshes, streamsides, open ditches, meadows, and areas around springs.
