About Hypericum calycinum L.
Hypericum calycinum is a low, creeping evergreen woody shrub, also classified as a subshrub or shrublet. It reaches about 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in height and 1โ2 m (3 ft 3 in โ 6 ft 7 in) in width, though it is often smaller. Its green, ovate leaves grow in opposite pairs, and are typically 10 cm (4 inches) long, with net-like veins on their undersides. Leaves are a vibrant green when grown in full sun, and a lighter yellow-green in shade. The underside of each leaf is blue-green, and the entire leaf turns purple in the fall. The flowers are 3โ5 cm (1.2โ2.0 in) in diameter, a rich yellow, with five petals and numerous yellow stamens. The flowers are described as "rose-like", and are usually borne singly or in clusters of two or three. This species flowers from June to September. Hypericum calycinum is native to southeast Europe and southwest Asia. It is a popular semi-evergreen garden shrub, and many named cultivars and hybrids have been derived from it. While most members of the Hypericum genus are not affected by rust fungi, rust can occur on H. calycinum, as well as on the cultivated variety Hypericum ร inodorum 'Elstead'.
