About Hypena sordidula Grote, 1872

Hypena sordidula, commonly known as the sordid hypena or sordid bomolocha moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Augustus Radcliffe Grote in 1872. It is distributed across North America, ranging from Quebec and Maine in the north, south to northern Florida and Texas, west to Louisiana and Kansas, and north again to Manitoba. The wingspan of adult moths measures between 24 and 30 mm. Adults fly from May to August, and the species produces two generations per year. The larvae of Hypena sordidula feed on plants in the Laportea genus. Two previously reported host plants, alder and butternut, have been confirmed to be incorrect hosts for this species.
