About Hypena madefactalis Guenée, 1854
Hypena madefactalis, commonly known as the gray-edged hypena or gray-eyed bomolocha, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Achille Guenée in 1854. Its distribution ranges from extreme southern Canada, specifically Quebec, southward to Georgia and Texas in the United States. The wingspan of adult moths measures 25 to 32 mm. The flight period of this moth falls from April to August in the southern portion of its range, and from May to August in the northern portion. There are at least two generations of this moth per year. The larvae of Hypena madefactalis feed primarily on walnut trees, most commonly Juglans nigra and Juglans cinerea. Larvae have also been successfully reared on shagbark hickory.
