About Hypena edictalis Walker

Hypena edictalis, commonly known as the large bomolocha, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. Francis Walker first described this species in 1859. In North America, its distribution ranges from Quebec and Maine in the north, south to Virginia and Kentucky, and west to the foothills of Alberta and the Peace River area of British Columbia. This moth has a wingspan of 33 to 37 mm. Adults fly from June to August, with timing varying by location. It produces one generation per year in the northern part of its range, while there is at least a partial second generation in areas from Ohio south through the Appalachian Mountains. The larvae of Hypena edictalis feed on plants from the Laportea genus.
