Nomenclature and Common Names

Hynobius quelpaertensis, commonly known as the Jeju salamander (also spelled Cheju salamander), is a species of salamander.

Geographic Distribution

It occurs on multiple islands and peninsulas off the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula, including Jindo, Geojedo, Jejudo, and Namhae.

Habitat

Its habitat is moist mountain forests.

Body Coloration

This salamander has a speckled brown coloration.

Adult Size

Adult males measure between 8 and 14 cm (3–6 inches) long, while adult females range from 7 to 11 cm (3–4 inches) long.

Male Distinguishing Traits

Males can also be distinguished by their thick front legs and black coloration on their backs.

Reproduction

This species mates between March and late April, and lays its eggs under small rocks and leaves in mountain pools.

Taxonomic History

The Jeju salamander was previously classified as a subspecies of the Korean salamander, under the scientific name Hynobius leechii quelpaertensis.
