It is naturally found in the U.S. states of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama. This plant grows in ditches, and along the edges of marshes, swamps, and ponds. Its common names are Texas spider-lily, western marsh spider-lily, Louisiana marsh spider-lily, and spring spiderlily. A key distinguishing feature of this species is a prominent yellow-green eye located at the center of its corona.
