About Hylotrupes bajulus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Description: Hylotrupes bajulus adults have a body length of around 8–20 mm (0.31–0.79 in), while mature larvae can reach 30 mm (1.2 in). These beetles are brown to black, but look grey because fine grey fur covers most of their upper surface. The species is distinguished by two conspicuously hairless tubercles on the pronotum. Two whitish, hair-covered spots are usually present on the elytra. Females do not have a true ovipositor, only a slightly more elongated telson. This species is polymorphic, with extreme variation in both size and appearance. In small specimens, the pubescent spots on the elytra almost completely disappear, and the legs and antennae become reddish in color. Distribution: This species originated in Europe. It has spread globally via timber and wood products, and now has an essentially cosmopolitan distribution, including Southern Africa, Asia, the Americas, Australia, and most of Europe and the Mediterranean.
