About Hylocomiadelphus triquetrus (Hedw.) Ochyra & Stebel
Hylocomiadelphus triquetrus (Hedw.) Ochyra & Stebel, commonly known as big shaggy-moss, rough goose neck moss, or electrified cat's tail moss, is a moss species belonging to the family Hylocomiaceae. It was previously classified under the name Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus. This species should not be confused with Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus, the square goose-necked moss. It is very frequently the dominant moss species in moderately rich forest habitats of boreal regions and the Pacific Northwest. It gets the common name 'electrified cat's tail moss' from its fuzzy appearance and tail-like shape. Ecologically, this is a terrestrial moss that grows on humus-rich substrates in montane forests. It occasionally grows on logs and trees in lowland rainforests, or on sandy-gravelly soils located near streams.
