About Hyles dahlii Geyer

Hyles dahlii Geyer has a wingspan ranging from 65 to 85 mm. This moth is naturally found on Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balearic Islands. Rarely, it can also be spotted on Sicily and along the north-eastern coast of Spain. It was intentionally introduced to Tunisia in the mid-1980s. On Menorca, the local population of Hyles dahlii is made up of hybrids between this species and Hyles euphorbiae. As a result of this hybridisation, adult imagos show very few of the typical species-specific characteristics of Hyles dahlii. Hybridisation also occurs on Malta, where hybrids form between Hyles dahlii and Hyles tithymali. Current research suggests that Hyles dahlii itself evolved from Hyles tithymali via geographic isolation.
