About Hygrocybe cantharellus (Schwein.) Murrill
Hygrocybe cantharellus, commonly called the chanterelle waxy cap, is a gilled mushroom (agaric) that belongs to the family Hygrophoraceae. The European species Hygrocybe lepida was previously classified under the name Hygrocybe cantharellus, but is now recognized as a separate distinct species. This mushroom has an orangish cap that grows up to 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) wide. Its reddish stem reaches 8 centimetres (3 1/4 inches) in height and 4 millimetres (3/16 inch) in thickness. It can look similar to other species in the Hygrocybe genus, including the uncommon Hygrocybe coccineocrenata. It has been recorded in North America and Australia.
