About Hydnum umbilicatum Peck

Hydnum umbilicatum, commonly called the depressed hedgehog, is a species of tooth fungus belonging to the family Hydnaceae. American mycologist Charles Horton Peck first scientifically described this species in 1902, based on material collected from New York. It is distributed in eastern North America, where it grows in association with pines. It is edible and considered good to eat. It can be easily confused with Hydnum repandum, which is also known as the wood hedgehog. The two species can be told apart by their differences in size and distribution: H. repandum is a much larger species that occurs in Europe.
