About Hulsea heterochroma A.Gray

Hulsea heterochroma A.Gray is an annual or perennial herb that produces thick, leafy green stems that can sometimes grow to heights over one meter (40 inches). Its toothed leaves measure 10 to 20 centimeters (4 to 8 inches) in length, and both the leaves and stems are covered in glandular hairs. Its leafy inflorescence bears many flower heads, which are also completely covered in small glandular hairs. The green, lance-shaped phyllaries are more than a centimeter (0.4 inch) long. The center of each flower head holds many yellow disc florets, and the edge is fringed with 28 to 75 narrow, thready ray florets that range in color from red-orange to reddish pink, growing up to one centimeter (0.4 inches) long each. It produces a hairy achene fruit that is 6 to 8 millimeters (0.24 to 0.32 inches) long.
