This species was originally described by Augustus Radcliffe Grote, with the scientific authority citation dating to 1875. It inhabits forest habitats across North America, with a range that spans the continent. In eastern North America, its distribution reaches southeastern Canada, and the U.S. states of Massachusetts, New York, and Mississippi. In western North America, its range extends south to California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. This moth has a wingspan of approximately 25 mm. Adult Homorthodes furfurata are active during the summer season. The larvae of this species feed on a variety of hardwood tree and shrub species, including maples in the genus Acer, species in the genus Prunus, and Oemleria cerasiformis.
