About Holmskioldia sanguinea Retz.

Holmskioldia is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae. This genus contains only one known species: Holmskioldia sanguinea Retz. This species is commonly known by the common names Chinese hat plant, cup-and-saucer-plant, or mandarin's hat. Holmskioldia is native to the Himalayas, covering the areas of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant, and has become naturalized in many other locations including Southeast Asia, New Caledonia, Hawaii, Mexico, the West Indies, and Venezuela. The genus name honors Johan Theodor Holmskiold (1731–1793), a Danish botanist who authored the two-volume work Beata ruris otia fungis Danicis, published in 1790 and 1799 respectively.
