About Holcolaetis zuluensis Lawrence, 1937

Holcolaetis zuluensis is a jumping spider species that belongs to the Salticidae family. It is commonly called the Zululand Holcolaetis jumping spider, and it lives in multiple countries across Africa. The confirmed distribution of Holcolaetis zuluensis includes Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa. In South Africa, the species has been recorded in the provinces of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga. This spider is most often found living in association with tree bark. One confirmed sampling location for the species is Ndumo Game Reserve, where individuals were collected from the bark of fever trees. It has been sampled across four biomes: Forest, Indian Ocean Coastal Belt, Grassland, and Savanna, and occurs at altitudes from 4 meters to 1427 meters above sea level. Both male and female Holcolaetis zuluensis have flattened bodies, a trait that lets them crawl into narrow crevices and move under tree bark. Females build their egg sacs under bark, placed either on the inner surface of the bark or directly on the tree trunk.
