About Hoita macrostachya (DC.) Rydb.

Hoita macrostachya (DC.) Rydb. is a species of legume, with the common names California hemp and large leather-root. It is native to California and Baja California, where it grows in moist areas across a variety of habitat types. This is a hairy, glandular perennial herb that grows a tall, branching stem that reaches a maximum height near two meters. Its sparse, widely spaced leaves are each compound, consisting of three leaflets. Each leaflet can grow up to 10 centimeters long, and is attached to a long petiole. The leaflet blades are glandular. The plant produces many clublike raceme inflorescences on sturdy stalks branching from its main stem. Each inflorescence holds many purplish flowers shaped like typical pea flowers. The fruit it produces is a hairy, veiny brown legume pod that is under one centimeter long, and contains a single kidney-shaped seed.
