About Hippeastrum puniceum (Lam.) Voss

Hippeastrum puniceum (Lam.) Voss produces 4 to 6 bright green leaves per plant. Each leaf is strap-shaped (lorate), measures 30 to 60 cm long by 2.5 to 3 cm wide, and tapers to an acute apex at the tip. Leaves are not fully developed when flowers emerge, meaning the species is more or less hysteranthous. Flowers grow in an umbel atop a 40 to 60 cm tall scape (flower stem). Lanceolate green bracts are present at the base of the umbel. The flower parts, properly called tepals rather than petals, are orange-red with paler coloring at their bases. The lower two tepals are significantly narrower than the lateral tepals.
