About Hipparchia azorinus (Strecker, 1899)

Scientific name: Hipparchia azorinus (Strecker, 1899). Description from Seitz: S. azorinus Streck. The author of this description has not examined this species in nature, and it is reported to originate from the Azores. This species is dark brown. Its forewing has a paler, yellowish discal area and a small apical ocellus. Its hindwing has an ill-defined yellow middle band that is strongly incurved above the anal angle and beneath the apex. The fringes are chequered. The underside of the hindwing has a pure white, sharply defined median band; on the basal side of this band there are two white spots: one irregular spot lies near the base, and a second quadrangular spot lies below the cell. This description was made from a male specimen. Strecker placed this form close to Hipparchia neomiris, and it appears to be allied to Hipparchia alcyone.
