About Hieracium venosum L.

Hieracium venosum L., commonly called Robin's plantain, rattlesnakeweed, or rattlesnake hawkweed, is a species of hawkweed belonging to the tribe Cichorieae in the family Asteraceae. It is widespread and common in south-central Canada (specifically Ontario) and the eastern United States, ranging from Michigan east to Maine, and south as far as Florida and Mississippi. Its common name refers to the fact that the habitats this plant grows in are typically also home to rattlesnakes. This species is a hairy perennial herb that grows up to 45 cm (18 inches) tall. Most of its leaves grow crowded around the base of the stem. A single plant can produce up to 20 flower heads; each head holds 30 to 45 yellow ray flowers and no disc flowers. It blooms from May to September, and prefers shady conditions with dry, sandy soil.
