About Hieracium gronovii L.
Hieracium gronovii has several common names: queendevil, hairy hawkweed, beaked hawkweed, and Gronovius' hawkweed. It is a North American plant species belonging to the tribe Cichorieae of the family Asteraceae. The species is common and widespread across most of the North American continent, ranging from Ontario in the north southward to Florida, the Dominican Republic, and Panama. It grows in rocky, dry, open woods and in fields. Hieracium gronovii is an herb that grows up to 80 cm (31 in) tall. It has a hairy stem that rises from a rosette of basal leaves. These basal leaves can reach up to 20 cm (8 in) long and have a broadly obovate shape. Leaves that grow along the stem are arranged alternately and are smaller in size. The base of the stem is hairier than the upper section of the stem, and the upper stem also has fewer, smaller leaves. Its small yellow flowers bloom from May to October, and each flower is up to 8 mm (0.3 in) across.
