About Heteropsis perspicua (Trimen, 1873)

This species, Heteropsis perspicua, was first described by Trimen in 1873. Males have a wingspan ranging from 38 to 43 millimeters, while females have a wingspan of 42 to 48 millimeters. Adult Heteropsis perspicua are active throughout the entire year. The wet-season form of this butterfly flies during spring and summer, and the dry-season form flies during autumn and winter. The species is distributed across KwaZulu-Natal, Eswatini, Transvaal, Mozambique, the area extending from Zimbabwe to Kenya, eastern Zaire, and Tanzania. The larvae of Heteropsis perspicua feed on multiple species from the grass family Poaceae; recorded host plants include Ehrharta erecta, Panicum maximum, and Pennisetum clandestinum.
