About Hesperolinon breweri (A.Gray) Small

Hesperolinon breweri is a rare species of flowering plant in the flax family, with common names Brewer's dwarf flax and Brewer's western flax. It is endemic to California, where it only occurs in three counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. This plant grows in chaparral ecosystems, most often on serpentine soils. It is an annual herb that grows erect, reaching a maximum height of a few centimeters. It has narrow, linear leaves that range in color from greenish to purplish. It produces dense inflorescences of flowers that have glandular sepals and five bright yellow petals. Protruding stamens bear large orange-yellow anthers. This uncommon California endemic is threatened by habitat development, but its current conservation status is not known.
