About Hesperaloe funifera (K.Koch) Trel.

Hesperaloe funifera (K.Koch) Trel., commonly called Coahuilan Hesperaloe, Giant Hesperaloe, or Mexican false yucca, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae. It is native to Val Verde County, Texas in the United States, and the northern Mexican states of Coahuila, San Luis Potosí, and Nuevo León. It is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant in other regions outside its native range. In the wild, this species grows on rocky slopes and open plains within the Tamaulipan mezquital and the eastern edges of the Chihuahuan Desert. It is a perennial plant that grows in a rosette form. It produces long, narrow, yellow-green blades that can reach up to 200 cm in length, but only 5 cm in width. Its flowering stalk can grow as tall as 250 cm, and bears long branches. The plant’s flowers are green or white, often tinged with purple, and measure approximately 25 mm across. The specific epithet funifera comes from the Latin words funis, meaning 'rope', and fero, meaning 'I bear'. This gives the epithet the meaning 'rope-bearing', which refers to the plant’s strong fibre that can be used to make rope.
