This species can be found in Japan, Taiwan, Jeju Island (Korea), China, Malaysia, India, and Australia; in Australia, it has only been recorded from Queensland. Females of Herpetogramma cynaralis have a wingspan of 20 millimeters (0.79 inches). In Australia, the larvae of this moth feed on Stephania japonica var. discolor.
