About Herniaria hirsuta L.

Herniaria hirsuta L. is a species of flowering plant in the Caryophyllaceae family, commonly called hairy rupturewort. It is native to Eurasia and North Africa, and has been introduced to other continents including North America. This is an annual herb with stems that can reach up to 20 cm (8 inches) long, and usually grows prostrate along the ground. Small, fuzzy, pale green leaves up to around one centimeter long densely cover the stems. Inflorescences grow in the leaf axils; each inflorescence holds three to eight hairy green sepals, and has no petals. The fruit is a tiny bumpy utricle that holds a single seed. In Morocco, this plant is used as an herbal remedy for kidney stones.
