About Hericium flagellum (Scop.) Pers.

Hericium flagellum (Scop.) Pers. is a fungus species belonging to the family Hericiaceae, and it is native to Europe. It was first described by Giovanni Antonio Scopoli, and Christiaan Hendrik Persoon placed it in the genus Hericium in 1797. In 1983, sexual incompatibility studies confirmed that this species is distinct from Hericium coralloides. This fungus occurs in montane areas, and it typically grows on newly fallen trunks and stumps of fir trees (Abies species), with a particular association with silver fir. One study found that more than half of all recorded Hericium flagellum specimens grew on silver fir deadwood located in high conservation value areas. The spores of Hericium flagellum measure 5–6.5 μm by 4.5–5.5 μm.
