About Hemieva ranunculifolia (Hook.) Raf.

Hemieva ranunculifolia (Hook.) Raf. is a flowering plant species belonging to the saxifrage family, and it is commonly known by the name buttercup suksdorfia. This is the only species that makes up the entire genus Hemieva. It is native to western North America, with its range extending from British Columbia and Alberta in the north down to northern California in the south. It grows in moist, rocky habitats found in mountains and foothills. It is a non-rhizomatous perennial herb that can reach up to 40 centimeters in total height. Its leaves have rounded leaf blades that can grow up to 4 centimeters wide, with several large lobes that are edged with rounded teeth. The leaf blades are light green, slightly fleshy, and hairless in texture, and they grow on petioles that can be up to 15 centimeters long. The inflorescence forms a dense, flat-topped cluster that can hold up to 35 flowers. This cluster sits at the top of a mostly bare stalk that is hairy and glandular. Each individual flower has a bell-shaped calyx made up of pointed sepals, plus five petals that are white or pink-tipped. The fruit it produces is an oval brown capsule that measures 4 millimeters in length.
