About Hemaris croatica Esper, 1800

This species, Hemaris croatica Esper, 1800, has different wingspans across its subspecies: the nominate subspecies H. croatica croatica has a wingspan of 36–64 millimetres (1.4–2.5 inches), while H. croatica fahira has a larger wingspan reaching 65–71 millimetres (2.6–2.8 inches). In northern regions and mountainous areas, this moth has one generation of adults that fly in July. In warmer regions, it has two generations, with active adults flying from May to June, and again in August. Its distribution ranges from the Balkans, Anatolia, and the Caucasus through to Iran. Along the Mediterranean coast, it occurs as far south as northern Israel. Discrete local populations also exist on the Crimea, in eastern Ukraine, and in western Kazakhstan.
