About Heliomeris longifolia Cockerell

Heliomeris longifolia, commonly called longleaf false goldeneye, is a North American flowering plant species belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is widely distributed across much of Mexico, ranging from Chihuahua and Sonora in the north south to Chiapas, and also occurs in the southwestern United States from Nevada to western Texas. This species is an annual herb that grows up to 15 cm (5.9 in) tall, and it has a large taproot. Its leaves can reach up to 16 cm (6.3 in) in length, and have hairs along their edges. A single plant can produce 25 or more yellow flower heads; each flower head holds 12 to 14 ray flowers that surround 50 or more tiny disc flowers. Two varieties of this species are recognized: Heliomeris longifolia var. annua (M.E.Jones) W.F.Yates and Heliomeris longifolia var. longifolia.
