About Heliconius sapho (Drury, 1782)

Scientific name: Heliconius sapho (Drury, 1782)

Description of the upperside: Antennae are black, eyes are brown, and the thorax and abdomen are black. All wings are mazarine blue. The anterior wings have a white band that crosses them from the middle of the anterior edges to the lower corners. The posterior wings are edged with a white border, intersected by the blue wing tendons.

Description of the underside: Palpi are grey. The breast and abdomen are black, streaked with white. The regions of the wings that are blue on the upperside are black on the underside, with the same white markings. Next to the body, the wings are adorned with fine red streaks that end in points, resembling rays issuing from the body. The wing margins are entire. The wingspan measures 3+1⁄4 inches (82 mm).
