About Heliconius eleuchia
Heliconius eleuchia is a large butterfly with a wingspan that reaches approximately 86 millimetres, or 3.4 inches. Individuals of this species have a slender body, and long, elongated front wings with a slightly concave inner edge. The basal half of both wings is navy blue. Two irregular-edged yellow bands cross the forewings, running from the costal nervure to the inner angle and separating the wing's apex from the rest of the wing. The hindwings have a large submarginal white area that is crossed by black nervure. The underside of the wings has the same pattern as the upper side, but the forewings have a scarlet line at the base, and the hindwings have several scarlet spots in the basal area. This species is found in Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador. It lives in riparian forest, at elevations up to 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) above sea level.
