About Helianthus simulans E.Watson

Helianthus simulans E.Watson is a North American sunflower species with the common name muck sunflower. It is native to the southeastern and south-central United States, growing across the region from eastern Texas to the Carolinas. Some sources suggest that populations found in the eastern half of this native range may actually be naturalized introductions rather than native individuals. This species grows in wet, mucky soils found in marshes, ditches, and along roadsides. It is a perennial herb that can reach up to 260 cm (over 8 feet) in height, and spreads through the growth of underground rhizomes. A single plant typically produces between 1 and 15 flower heads. Each flower head holds 12 to 23 yellow ray florets, which surround 100 or more disc florets that can be red, yellow, or brown in color.
