About Helianthus hirsutus Raf.

Helianthus hirsutus Raf., commonly called hairy sunflower, is a North American sunflower species. It is widespread across south-central Canada, eastern and central United States, and northeastern Mexico. Its distribution extends from Ontario south to Florida, Coahuila, and Nuevo León, and reaches west as far as Minnesota, Nebraska, and Texas. This is a perennial plant that can grow up to 200 cm (almost 7 feet) tall, and spreads via underground rhizomes. Its leaves and stems are covered in stiff hairs. A single individual plant can produce 1 to 7 flower heads; each head holds 10 to 15 yellow ray florets surrounding 40 or more yellow disc florets. The species grows in sunny spots within open forests or along forest edges.
