About Helianthemum oelandicum (L.) DC.
This species, Helianthemum oelandicum (L.) DC., typically grows from a central stock, with numerous branches that spread horizontally or grow ascending. It has no stipules. Its small leaves, which measure around 10mm long, are simple, green on the upper surface, and densely hairy and grey on the lower surface. This leaf trait is distinguishing in areas where H. nummularium also grows. Its flowers are yellow, with 5 petals that are free at the base and 5 sepals. Flowers are arranged in cymes, and each cyme usually holds 1 to 6 flowers.
This plant is restricted to dry limestone rocky habitats. In Britain, it always grows close to the sea, while on mainland Europe it is limited to calcareous upland ranges such as the Alps.
Its distribution covers several areas of Europe including France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden, along with parts of north Africa and eastern Mediterranean countries. In the British Isles, it has a very limited distribution, found only in parts of the South Wales coastline and a small number of locations on Anglesey and the Great Orme.
