About Haworthiopsis tessellata (Haw.) G.D.Rowley
Haworthiopsis tessellata is a slow-growing evergreen succulent species that grows up to 15 centimeters tall. It is a stemless plant, and its leaves have square patterns on their upper surfaces and small small teeth along their margins. The greenish leaves are arranged into a rosette, and they turn reddish when exposed to full sun. This species produces small white flowers held in an inflorescence. It is extremely closely related to two other species: Haworthiopsis granulata, which is restricted to the far south-west of H. tessellata’s range near Laingsburg, and Haworthiopsis venosa, which is found only in a single location on the south coast of South Africa. This is a widespread species that occurs in the arid hinterland of South Africa, and extends as far north as southern Namibia. It grows in the dry, summer-rainfall Karoo habitat, where it can be found growing among bushes and in rocky areas.
