About Haworthiopsis coarctata (Haw.) G.D.Rowley
This succulent species, formally Haworthiopsis coarctata (Haw.) G.D.Rowley, grows in large clumps in its natural habitat, producing long stems packed with robust succulent leaves. Its foliage is normally dark green, but it sometimes develops a rich purple-red color when grown in full sunlight. It is often confused with the closely related species Haworthiopsis reinwardtii, which grows just to the east of H. coarctata’s natural range. The two species can be distinguished by leaf traits: H. coarctata has smaller, smoother, rounder tubercles on its leaves, while the tubercles of H. reinwardtii are sometimes larger, flatter and whiter. H. coarctata also typically has much wider, fatter leaves than H. reinwardtii. Under its older synonym Haworthia coarctata, this species has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit for cultivation.
