About Harmochirus brachiatus (Thorell, 1877)

Harmochirus brachiatus has the characteristic appearance shared by all members of the genus Harmochirus. This species displays strong sexual dimorphism, and males have a particularly distinct appearance. H. brachiatus has a broad distribution across Asia, with confirmed records from India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It is especially common in Southeast Asia, and has been extensively studied in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The species is most often found in agricultural habitats, particularly rice fields, where it acts as a predator of pest insects. It also lives in forest litter and secondary forest environments. As a predator in Asian agricultural ecosystems, especially in rice cultivation systems, H. brachiatus fills an important ecological role. It is well documented as a beneficial predator that contributes to controlling pest insect populations in rice fields.
