Males of Hapalopus formosus Ausserer, 1875 live 3 to 4 years, while females live 8 to 10 years. The species grows to a full size of 8 to 10 centimeters. Individuals sold in the pet trade are thought to be hybrids, and these specimens grow larger than typical purebred individuals. Their legs are tan and light brown, and their carapace is patterned black and orange. Their opisthosoma is black with orange spotting, which gives the species its common nickname 'pumpkin patch'.
