Halesia tetraptera J.Ellis is a small deciduous tree that reaches up to 10 meters in height. Its leaves range from ovate to lanceolate in shape, measuring 5 to 16 centimeters long and 4 to 7 centimeters broad. Its flowers are 1 to 2.5 centimeters long, with a four-lobed white corolla. It produces a dry drupe fruit that is 4 centimeters long, with four wings running along its length. This species occurs in scattered populations across most of the eastern United States; its native range extends north to West Virginia, south to northern Florida, and west to Oklahoma. Across most of this native range, the species is thinly distributed, and it is becoming rare in many areas. Halesia tetraptera var. tetraptera is classified as a pollinator plant that supports and attracts butterflies and bees.
