Technical description and variation. The wingspan of Hada plebeja Linnaeus, 1761 is 30–35 mm. The forewings measure 14–17 mm in length. Forewings are lilac-grey, suffused with olive fuscous, which is darkest in the median area. The claviform stigma is small, black-edged, and followed by a broad bidentate pale patch at the base of vein 2. The orbicular and reniform stigmas are pale grey with white edges. The marginal area is dark. The submarginal line is preceded by black dentate markings. The veins are more or less covered with grey scales. The hindwing is fuscous, paler towards the base, with a pale fringe. The leucostigma Haw. variant has a whiter ground color. The hilaris Zett. variant is a form of leucostigma where the whitish orbicular and pale blotch on vein 2 are confluent, forming one long streak. The ochrea Tutt variant is common in Britain, and has forewings varied with yellow scales. The latenai Pierr. variant is a melanic mountain form found in Switzerland and the Hebrides.
