About Hackelia mundula (Jeps.) Ferris

Hackelia mundula (Jeps.) Ferris is a species of flowering plant in the borage family, commonly known as pink stickseed. It is native to the high mountains of California, particularly the Sierra Nevada, and its range extends into Oregon. This is a lush, hairy perennial herb that reaches a maximum height between 40 and 80 centimeters (16 and 31 inches). It grows a set of erect stems, with oval or lance-shaped leaves that are most abundant around the base of the plant and can grow up to 22 centimeters (8.7 inches) long. Upper stems are mostly leafless, and bear cyme inflorescences made up of individual flowers. Each small flower has 5 rounded light pink lobes that fade to light blue as they age, and each lobe has a smaller petal-like appendage at its base. The fruit produced by this species is a small nutlet covered in thin, hairlike prickles.
