About Habrodais grunus (Boisduval, 1852)

Habrodais grunus, commonly known as the golden hairstreak, is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Lycaenidae. This butterfly is found across North America, with confirmed populations in southern Arizona, Oregon, California, and Mexico. Its preferred habitats include oak woodland areas, canyons, and mountain ridges. The wingspan of adult golden hairstreaks measures between 25 and 32 mm. Adults produce one new generation per year, and are active in flight from June through September. Adult golden hairstreaks gather moisture from a variety of sources; they may also feed on aphid honeydew or other plant and insect exudates. The larvae of this species feed on the young leaves of four specific plant species: Chrysolepis chrysophylla, Quercus chrysolepis, Quercus vaccinifolia, and Lithocarpus densiflorus.
