About Gynacantha rosenbergi Kaup, 1867
Gynacantha rosenbergi, first described by Kaup in 1867, is a large dragonfly. It reaches an approximate overall length of 85 mm and has a wingspan of around 119 mm, with distinct striking coloration. Its abdomen is dark rusty brown with greenish-yellow markings, while its thorax is pale green. It has large eyes that are green tinged with yellow; like all other members of the Aeshnidae family, its eyes meet and join together at the top of the head. When viewed from above, the frons in front of the eyes bears a dark marking shaped like the letter 'T'.
Gynacantha rosenbergi is not commonly recorded. Its known distribution ranges from the Moluccas through Vanuatu to New Caledonia. In Australia, it has been recorded from coastal north-east Queensland, north of approximately the area around Townsville. It has also been found on Moa Island in Torres Strait and on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
