About Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae Schwein.

Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae Schwein. is a plant pathogen that causes the disease cedar-apple rust. Wherever apples or crabapples (genus Malus) and eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) grow together, cedar-apple rust is often a destructive or disfiguring disease that affects both host plants. Apples, crabapples, and eastern red cedar are the most common hosts of this pathogen. Similar diseases caused by this fungus can occur on quince and hawthorn, and many other juniper species can act as hosts in place of eastern red cedar.
