About Gymnosporangium globosum (Farl.) Farl.

Gymnosporangium globosum (Farl.) Farl. is a fungal plant pathogen that causes cedar-hawthorn rust. This rust disease is common throughout the Midwest and Eastern United States. The pathogen’s ability to overwinter lets it thrive in seasonal climates that have harsh winters. It prefers humid, cloudy conditions to develop and grow. Its spores rely on rain and wind to disperse to the pathogen’s alternate host. This species requires two separate hosts to complete its life cycle, which limits its geographic range: both required hosts must be present within a 1–2 mile radius for it to grow successfully.
