This species, scientifically known as Gymnopilus purpuratus (Cooke & Massee) Singer, has a cap that measures between 1.5 and 6 cm across. The cap shape ranges from convex to obtuse, with a reddish brown color and a dry, scaly surface that sometimes cracks as it ages. The stem is brown-red, covered in fibers, and develops blue-green spots in areas where it has been damaged. It bears crowded, adnexed gills that range in color from yellow to orange. The stem is dusted with rusty orange spores and has a scanty, cottony partial veil.
