Goodenia mystrophylla is a perennial herb that produces lance-shaped leaves, with the narrower end positioned toward the base. These leaves grow up to 100 mm (3.9 in) long and 25 mm (0.98 in) wide, and sometimes have toothed edges. Its flowers are yellow with purplish markings, measuring 6โ11 mm (0.24โ0.43 in) long. Bracteoles up to 12 mm (0.47 in) long are located at the base of each flower, and flowers grow on a low-lying or prostrate flowering stem that reaches up to 250 mm (9.8 in) in length. The lower sepal of this species is oblong to more or less heart-shaped, 4โ6 mm (0.16โ0.24 in) long, with wings that are approximately 1 mm (0.039 in) wide. Flowering occurs across most months of the year. The fruit is an oval capsule that holds a single round seed 1.5 mm (0.059 in) in diameter. This species grows in sandy soil, most commonly on sand dunes. Its range extends from Cape York in Queensland to Narrabeen in New South Wales, Australia, and it is also found in western New Guinea and the Louisiade Archipelago.
