About Gomphus pulchellus Selys, 1840

Gomphus pulchellus, commonly known as the western clubtail, is a dragonfly species belonging to the family Gomphidae. This species is found in Western Europe, but it is not present in the British Isles. Its natural habitats are clean ponds, canals, and clay and mud holes. Adult Gomphus pulchellus measure between 47 and 50 millimeters in total length. Despite its common name including 'clubtail', it is the only member of Gomphidae that does not have a club-shaped abdomen. Mature adults are primarily pale olive-green and have blue eyes. This species emerges early in spring; adults can be seen as early as the end of March in southern France, and their flight season extends until August depending on the location.
