About Gladiolus cunonius (L.) Gaertn.
There has been significant confusion regarding the type choice for Antholyza. Hitchcock in 1923 and 1929 earlier selected Anth. cunonia (now recognized as a Gladiolus species), making Antholyza a synonym. But if Anth. cunonia is considered the generitype as Anomalesia cunonia (L.) R. Br., the latter genus would replace Antholyza. A later choice was Anth. ringens by Brown in 1932. Sometimes it was accepted in this genus, but Goldblatt in 1990 transferred it to Babiana Ker Gawl. Goldblatt does not accept Anth. ringens as the generitype of Antholyza, causing no disruption. However, the Index Nominum Genericorum (ING) notes Linnaeus' 1753 comments that Anth. cunonia may belong to a different genus from Antholyza, arguing it conflicts with the generic protologue, and accepts Anth. ringens as the generitype. If this is accepted and Anth. ringens is treated as a Babiana species, Antholyza becomes the correct name for Babiana (since Babiana is conserved only against Beverna Adans. 1763).
